Introduction
Most professional athletes use sports massage by using manual techniques to manipulate soft tissues (muscles tendons and ligaments), and aid lymphatic drainage. In sports treatments it helps to enhance performance and prevent injury. Stretching muscles is a vital component of the treatment.
What is it good for?
Sports massage is effective in removing the build up of lactic acid, and treating soft tissue injuries. These common injuries can be intensely painful and lead to more serious problems. Muscle imbalances can be addressed and the muscles released by specific bodywork skills. Massage can be used as a highly effective form of stress control and relaxation.
What happens in a consultation?
At the appointment: During a Sports Massage the area that you have injuries or issues with will be focused on. This will not be a whole body massage. The practitioner will discuss how long you have had this problem and treatments and when it occurs and then may do some range of movement tests, before deciding on a course of action including massage and other neuromuscular and muscle energy, core Myofascial release techniques. The practitioner will make recommendations for rehabilitation and future support. The use of arnica, antispasmodic or plain oil may be used during the treatment. There use will be kept to a minimum. It is best to wear shorts or underwear. You will be covered with towels and only the area being worked upon will be exposed.
After the appointment: Avoid alcohol for 3 hours or preferably the day. Drink about 2 pints of water after a treatment to avoid/ reduce aches and pains.
